In today's generation, almost 10%-20% of the global female population suffers from Poly Cystic Ovarian Disorder (PCOD), affecting women of reproductive age with symptoms like irregular periods, acne and unwanted facial hair to name a few common ones.
Hirsutism or Unwanted facial hair is the condition that causes excess and thicker hair to grow on certain parts of the body. One may develop coarse and dark Hair mostly on the upper lip, chin, chest, limbs, back and sometimes abdomen. It may cause mental distress and social stigma due to having male pattern hair growth in females, but it’s treatable with options like combination of proper diet, permanent laser hair reduction and medical management to control the peak Androgen levels by a licensed Gynaecologist.
The gold standard of laser hair reduction(LHR) is a Diode Laser which directly targets the hair follicle to destroy it. This has been approved by the FDA as a safe and effective treatment option. LHR can be done on smaller areas of the body like chin and upper lip as well as larger areas like the back and limbs. One may experience pricking sensation and heat, the extent of which differs on the area of skin being treated. Number of sittings required 8-12, every 3 weeks apart followed by a maintenance regime every 2-3 months.
